The diamond 4Cs explained: Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat
The short answer
The 4Cs define a diamond's quality and value. Cut controls sparkle and matters most to the eye; Colour grades absence of tint from D (colourless) to Z; Clarity measures internal inclusions from Flawless to Included (I3); Carat is weight (0.2g). An app or loupe estimates these; only a laboratory grades them.
The four Cs are a quality grading scale, not an appraisal
Created by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the mid-twentieth century, the 4C system established the world's universal diamond language: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight.
Crucially, the 4Cs represent an objective grading of physical characteristics, not a monetary price tag. Value is derived by comparing those grades against market demand and completed auction transactions. A high carat stone with poor cut and visible inclusions can be worth far less than a smaller stone with pristine cut and color.
Cut: the C that governs light, brilliance and fire
Cut is the only C determined by human hands rather than geological forces, and gemmologists widely consider it the most important factor in a diamond's beauty.
A well-cut round brilliant diamond acts as a system of mirrors: light enters through the table, reflects internally off the pavilion facets, and bounces straight back out to the viewer's eye as brilliant white light (brilliance) and rainbow flashes (fire). When cut too shallow, light leaks out the bottom; when cut too deep, light escapes out the sides, leaving the centre dull and dark.
Color: grading absence of tint from D to Z
In white diamonds, the color scale actually grades the absence of color:
- D, E, F (Colourless): Completely icy white. Extremely rare and commands substantial price premiums.
- G, H, I, J (Near Colourless): Look face-up icy white to the naked eye, especially when set in jewellery. This is the value sweet spot for buyers.
- K, L, M (Faint Tint): Carry a noticeable warm yellow or brownish warmth, which can be disguised pleasantly in yellow gold settings.
- N through Z: Noticeable tint; below Z, stones enter the Fancy Color classification.
Clarity: eye-clean vs microscope-clean
Formed miles beneath the earth under extreme heat and pressure, almost all natural diamonds have internal marks (inclusions) and surface blemishes. Clarity grades them under 10x magnification:
The scale runs from Flawless (FL) and Internally Flawless (IF), down through VVS1–VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included), VS1–VS2 (Very Slightly Included), SI1–SI2 (Slightly Included), to I1–I3 (Included).
The practical goal for most jewellery owners is an eye-clean diamond — typically found in VS2 or SI1 grades — where inclusions are invisible without magnification, giving the appearance of flawless perfection at a fraction of the cost.
Carat: weight is not diameter
Carat measures weight, not physical size. One metric carat equals exactly 0.20 grams (200 milligrams). A round brilliant diamond weighing 1.00 carat measures approximately 6.5 millimetres across if cut to ideal proportions.
Diamond prices jump disproportionately at round milestone thresholds — known in the trade as magic weights (0.50ct, 0.75ct, 1.00ct, 1.50ct, 2.00ct). A stone weighing 0.98 carats often trades at a 15 to 25 per cent discount compared to an identical 1.00 carat stone, despite being indistinguishable to the naked eye.
What an image estimates vs what a laboratory measures
A photograph can reliably estimate table proportions, outline symmetry, apparent color cast against a known mount, and significant inclusions. Carat uses this to estimate carat weight from setting dimensions and evaluate the 4Cs within narrow bands.

Which of the 4Cs is most important?
Cut is universally acknowledged by gemmologists as the most important of the 4Cs. A diamond with superior cut sparkles intensely and masks modest color and clarity grades, whereas a poorly cut diamond looks dull and lifeless regardless of how high its color or clarity is.
What does an eye-clean diamond mean?
An eye-clean diamond has no inclusions or blemishes that can be seen by the naked human eye from a standard viewing distance of six to twelve inches under normal lighting. Most VS1, VS2, and many SI1 diamonds are eye-clean.
Why does a 0.99 carat diamond cost much less than a 1.00 carat?
Diamond pricing is non-linear and jumps at round 'magic weight' numbers (0.50ct, 1.00ct, 2.00ct) due to traditional consumer demand. A 0.99ct diamond looks identical in a setting to a 1.00ct stone, but costs significantly less per carat.
Can a diamond's 4Cs be graded inside a ring setting?
They can be estimated, but not officially certified. The metal setting hides the girdle and pavilion, masks yellow or brown body tint, and prevents accurate micro-scale weighing. Gemmological laboratories only issue grading certificates for loose, unmounted stones.
