Your ring has no hallmark. What that does and does not mean

Nothing, on its own. British hallmarking is compulsory only above one gram for gold, 7.78 grams for silver and half a gram for platinum, many countries never required it, and wear or resizing removes marks. An unmarked ring needs an acid, conductivity or XRF test at a jeweller to settle what it is.

An absent mark is not a verdict

A hallmark is a statement that a piece was tested. Its absence is not the opposite statement. It is the absence of a statement, and the difference matters, because an unmarked ring can be 22 carat gold and a confidently stamped one can be plated brass.

There are four ordinary reasons a genuine piece carries no mark: it sits below the weight at which marking is compulsory, it was made somewhere that never required marking, the mark has worn away, or the marked section of metal has been cut out of it. None of them says anything about the metal. Nor does the reverse: a struck 750 is a claim by whoever held the punch, and punches are available to anybody.

Small and light pieces are legitimately unmarked

British hallmarking becomes compulsory only above a weight threshold, and the thresholds are low enough that a great deal of real jewellery falls beneath them.

A fine chain, a pair of small studs, a thin stacking band, a bangle in light wire, a charm: any of these can hold less than a gram of gold and be sold entirely lawfully with nothing struck on it. Weigh the piece before drawing a conclusion from a bare interior. A scale reading to a tenth of a gram is enough to tell you whether the question applies at all.

Marks wear away, and resizing removes them

A hallmark is a shallow punch in soft metal. Forty years on a hand, with washing-up, door handles, sleeves and the occasional polish, flattens it. On a ring worn daily the inside of the shank is the surface in constant contact with skin, and that is precisely where the mark sits. Worn marks go in stages: legible, then partial, then a smooth depression you can feel with a fingernail but not read.

Resizing is more abrupt. To make a ring smaller a jeweller cuts a section out of the shank and solders the ends together; to make it larger, a piece is let in. Either way the section that goes is at the bottom of the band, which is where the hallmark usually is. A resized ring can lose its marks entirely in ten minutes, with no dishonesty anywhere in the process. A faint solder seam at the base of the shank, visible under a loupe as a slightly different colour, is the sign that this is what happened.

Most of the world never ran an assay office

Compulsory independent hallmarking is a British, Irish and broadly European arrangement. It is not how jewellery is marked everywhere.

The United States has no assay offices. American pieces carry a quality stamp applied by the manufacturer – 10K, 14K, 18K, PLAT, STERLING – with no independent body having tested anything. Federal law expects such a stamp to be accompanied by the registered trademark of the firm standing behind it, which is why a maker’s mark beside a number is worth more than a number alone. Plenty of genuine older and imported work carries neither.

Elsewhere practice ranges from a full convention hallmark to a bare fineness number to nothing at all. High-carat gold in the Gulf, India and South-East Asia is frequently sold by weight against an assay done at the point of sale rather than a struck mark. An inherited piece carried from another country may never have been marked in its life. Reading gold hallmarks sets out the systems you are likely to meet, and the silver marks work the same way.

What to do next, in order

  1. Look at the whole band under magnification and good light. Not a glance at the obvious place. Rotate the ring through a full turn under a 10x loupe with light raking across the surface at a shallow angle, which throws shadow into a shallow punch and makes it readable. Marks hide under the setting, on the inside of the shoulders and beneath a later sizing bar.
  2. Check the other pieces from the same set. Marks are split across components more often than people expect: a necklace marked only on the clasp tongue, earrings only on one post or butterfly, a bracelet only on the tab beside the box catch.
  3. Weigh it. A scale reading to a tenth of a gram tells you whether the piece was ever required to be marked, and gives you the figure every melt calculation needs.
  4. Read the wear at the high points. The top of the shank, the shoulders and the edges of the setting will show a plating boundary before anywhere else does.
  5. Have the metal tested. Acid on a touchstone, an electronic conductivity tester, or X-ray fluorescence at a jeweller. This is the step that produces an answer rather than an inference.

Reading a piece for plating

Plating fails where the piece is touched. Look under strong light at the top of the shank, the shoulders, the edge of a bezel and the underside where a ring rests against the next finger.

  • A different colour at the high points. A cooler grey or a warmer pink showing through yellow, or yellow showing through white, is a plating boundary. Solid metal wears thinner without changing colour.
  • A green or dark line at an edge or in a crease, where a copper-bearing base metal has corroded beneath the coating.
  • A magnet. Gold, silver, platinum and palladium are all unattracted, so a pull means ferrous metal, usually a plated steel core or a steel spring.
  • Weight against size. Platinum is dense and unmistakable in the hand. A large, light ring described as platinum is claiming something the weight does not support.

White gold complicates this, because most white gold is rhodium plated over a slightly yellowish alloy. A warm tint at the shank of a white ring is ordinary wear on a real gold ring, not evidence of base metal.

The three tests, and what each costs you

Acid and touchstone. The piece is rubbed on a stone to leave a streak of metal and graded acids are applied to it. Cheap, quick, decisive about carat, and it cuts through any coating, which is its advantage over surface methods. It leaves a small rub mark in an inconspicuous place.

Electronic conductivity testers. A probe on the surface, a reading in seconds, no mark left. Useful for sorting a box quickly, and readily confused by heavy plating and unusual alloys.

X-ray fluorescence. Reads the alloy without marking the piece and gives a figure for each element present. It sees only the top few microns, so a thick gold-filled layer can mislead it, but it is the best of the three and many jewellers and gold buyers keep one on the counter.

None of this can be done from an image. Carat reads whatever marks a photograph shows, transcribes them as struck and interprets them, and where there is no mark it reasons from colour, wear, construction and plating signs towards an estimate with the reasoning attached, naming the test that would settle what the picture cannot. That is where a photograph stops and a jeweller begins; how it works sets out the rest.

Why would a jeweller remove a hallmark?

Is an unmarked piece worth less?

It can be, because a buyer must pay for testing or price in the uncertainty, and an unverifiable attribution to a maker is worth nothing. Once fineness is established by XRF or acid, an unmarked piece of the same metal and weight sells on much the same basis.
